Il a également participé aux premiers documentaires hip hop, tels que "Style Wars", "Wild Style" et "Beat Street", ainsi que dans "Flashdance" (1983). Ken Swift est un vrai artiste qui continue de danse pour l'expression et l'amour qu'il porte à la musique et à la danse hip-hop. Parallèlement, il organise des ateliers sur l'histoire de la culture hip-hop pour les plus jeunes: 7-11 ans. A son actif, il possède l'école “The Ken Swift School of Hip Hop Fundamentals” à Brooklyn en 2005. Ken Swift participated in the first International Hip Hop tour, “New York City Rap” (1982) sponsored by Europe 1. Along with RSC, Ken was featured in the first Hip Hop documentary film “Style Wars” and the first Hip Hop motion picture “Wild Style”. His two minute, riveting dance performance in the movie “Flashdance” (1983) along with other members of RSC catapulted national attention to the Hip Hop scene with help from a dance segment and interview on “The David Letterman Show.” In 1984, Ken also danced in the motion picture “Beat Street”.
In 1990, Ken collaborated with dancers from the Rhythm Technicians, and co-authored as well as choreographed the play “So What Happens Now?” which brought about the beginning of Ghettoriginal Productions Dance Company. As co-founder of this group Ken performed at The Kennedy Center Honors’ “Hip Hop You Don’t Stop,” directed by Ernest Dickerson, Lincoln Center’s Serious Fun, The Boston Ballet’s “From The Street To The Stage,” The Apollo Theater “Capoiera Angola” and with Savion Glover in “Hip Hop Meets Tap.” For these achievements Ken and Ghettoriginal Productions Dance Company received a “Bessie Award” for choreography.
In 1996, Ken co-authored, co-directed, co-choreographed, and performed Off-Broadway’s first Hip Hop Musical “Jam On The Groove.” He is a recipient of Drama Desk Award, also nominated for Best Choreography in the 1995-1996 seasons.
Ken has judged dance championships all over the world in countries such as France, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Norway, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, and the U.S. Because of his expertise, reputation and dedication to the art form, Ken became a member of the 1999 U.S. Team “1st Plattoon” which took first place in a six-country dance championship The Korea World Cup. Many know Ken Swift to be one of the greatest influences the dance of B-Boying history. Like a legend, B-Boys and B-Girls around the world have emulated his image and style, be it from what is captured on film throughout the years.
Ken is a multi-talented artist who continues to enjoy the dance for its true worth, freedom of expression and love of music, at the same time realizes the importance of educating people in true Hip Hop Culture. At P.S. 84 in Manhattan, with a grant from the New York Historical Society, Ken organized a course for 7-11 year olds entitled “The History of Hip Hop Culture in New York: Focusing on Dance”. In 2004, Ken opened “The Ken Swift School of Hip Hop Fundamentals” at Breaklife Studios in Brooklyn NY, February 2005.
Ken plans to continue dancing, and sharing the legacy and knowledge of the incredible dance of breaking with anyone willing to rock the dance floor.
